Dental crowns are a versatile and effective treatment in dentistry. Also known as “caps” because they completely cover a tooth, they are used to restore a tooth to health or to improve its appearance. At Mercer Smiles Family Dentistry, we provide quality dental crowns for the patients of Robbinsville, NJ.
A dental crown is a custom-made dental prosthetic that is fitted onto a tooth. It can be made of ceramic, porcelain, resin, or stainless steel. The material used will depend on the location of the crown and the reason why it is being placed. For example, a crown used cosmetically, simply to improve the appearance of a tooth, will likely be made of porcelain or ceramic because these materials can be shaded to match the color of the surrounding teeth, creating a natural-looking restoration. Your dentist at Mercer Smiles will discuss your options with you before selecting the best material to use.
Dental crowns can be used to treat dental issues such as:
It usually takes two visits to have a dental crown created and placed onto a tooth. During your first visit, an impression will be taken of the affected tooth that will be used by a dental laboratory to create the crown. The tooth will first be prepared by being cleaned and filed down a small portion to create enough room for the crown to fit. A local anesthetic will be used to keep you as comfortable as possible. If the tooth is severely damaged or broken and cannot support a crown, your dentist will build it up instead of filing it down. A temporary crown will be placed on the prepared tooth at the end of this appointment while the impression is sent to the dental lab.
It may take about two or three weeks for the completed crown to arrive back from the dental lab. You will return to our office in Robbinsville, NJ to have the temporary crown removed and replaced with the permanent crown, which will be fastened with a special adhesive.
